Creating software startups may seem like a gold rush. People always talk about catching some big wave or pursuing some hot new thing.

At the same time I feel that successful software entrepreneurs are more like athletes rather than gold rushers. “Software athletes” play a different game with different rules:

  • It’s not about luck, it’s about skill.
  • It’s not about catching the next big wave, it’s about training better.
  • The most profitable niche is where you have the most expertise. Not where the current gold fever is.

Someone who is the best at his niche usually gets most of the market share. As Seth Godin puts it:

“Extraordinary benefits accrue to the tiny minority of people who are able to push just a tiny bit longer than most.”

“Software athletes” are the ones who push longer than most, when the “gold rushers” are already gone pursuing some other shiny thing. Be a “software athlete” and success will come!
